Rescuers collect 650 cubic meters of fuel spilled in Norilsk

MOSCOW, Jun 8 (PRIME) -- Rescuers have collected over 650 cubic meters of oil products from the water surface during the aftermath of the accident at the TETs-3 power plant near Norilsk since June 1, the Federal Agency for Sea and Inland Water Transport said on Monday.

A fuel tank at Norilsk-Taimyr Energy Company lost pressure on May 29 and leaked out fuel and lubricants into the river Ambarnaya, causing a fire.

A spokesperson for Norilsk Nickel, the world’s top nickel and PGM producer and the core enterprise in the region, blamed warming of the permafrost, which moved supports under the tank.

Norilsk Nickel said on June 7 it will finish first internal probes into the accident in June, while the entire probe will continue until the end of the year.

The company also plans to dismantle the damaged tank of the plant from which the fuel spilled to confirm the cause of the accident.
